Premier League roundup: Spurs falter as United see off woeful Bolton.

After a fairy tale week which saw Theiry Henry scoring on his return to The Emirates, Paul Scholes popped up with a goal in his first game back at Old Trafford after a shock return to Manchester United helping them grab 3 points and join Manchester City at the top of the table. Manchester United fans never thought they would see the 38 year old midfielder score again after his retirement at the end of last season, and it marked his first goal since August 2010. Wayne Rooney missed his second penalty in as many weeks with a great save from Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan after Danny Welbeck was tripped in the area by Zat Knight. Rooney never dropped his head however and set up Paul Scholes goal just before the break, and later picked up a second assist as Danny Welbeck netted once again, with Michael Carrick picking up the third as Bolton’s poor run continued.

Robbie Keane didn’t have the same fairytale return to England as Henry and Scholes, as he failed to make any sort of impact when he came off the bench for Aston Villa, who drew 1-1 at home to Everton. Darren Bent put villa 1-0 up with a close range effort however his goal was cancelled out in the 69th minute by Victor Anichebe.

Tottenham have been on a fantastic run of late and a win on the weekend could have seen them go level with City and United at the top of the table on 48 points but a brave performance by Wolves kept them at bay. Wolves had more than their share of luck however as Steven Fletcher’s opener came from a contentious corner, and Adebayor had a goal ruled out for a questionable offside. A goal early in the second half from Luka Modric managed to salvage a point for Spurs who remain third in the league. No one can win every game and the way in which Spurs react to this slip up will show whether they have what it takes to push on for first place.

Tottenham weren’t the only top side to slip up this weekend as Arsenal lost 3-2 to Swansea thanks to a late goal by Danny Graham to leave Arsenal four points off the top four.

Meanwhile Liverpool drew 0-0 with Stoke at Anfield in a game which perhaps is the perfect example of their home season so far. The Reds had plenty of possession but just lacked that goal scoring touch. With Suarez still serving his ban it seems somewhat of an odd choice for Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish to start with Dirk Kuyt as a lone front man with Bellamy and Carroll warming the bench, not even Steven Gerrard could inspire the reds this time.

Chelsea managed to close the gap on the top 3 with a good victory over Sunderland who have been great since Martin O’Neill’s appointment as manager. Fernando Torres might not be able to buy a goal for love or money right now but he was the provider as his sublime scissor kick rocketed off the crossbar and came off Frank Lampard for the only goal of the game.

Blackburn showed great fighting spirit to beat Fulham 3-1 after having to play most of the match with 10 men after Yakubu’s dismissal for a clumsy challenge on Danny Murphy in the 23rd minute. Thanks to goals from Morten Gamst Pedersen, David Dunn and Steven N’Zonzi Blackburn were able to climb out of the relegation zone.

Newcastle continued their impressive season with a 1-0 victory over QPR with a goal from Leon Best.

So whilst the table looks very similar to how it did at the start of the weekend Manchester City have the chance to go 3 points clear of United tonight as they face off against Wigan.
