Premier League Roundup
Robbie Keane must have been feeling left out last week with the return of Premier league old boys Thierry Henry and Paul Scholes finding the net again in English football. The Irish international tormented former club Wolves with 2 great goals to give Aston Villa a 3-2 victory and condemn Wolves to the relegation zone.
After a disappointing draw with Stoke last week at Anfield you would have thought the Reds would come out hungry for the 3 points, however a miserable performance found them losing 3-1 to Bolton, who have only managed one other win at home all season. Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish lambasted the performance that left his team 6 points off the top 4, however there is a silver lining with the chance to go to Wembley for the Carling Cup if Liverpool can hold their 1-0 lead over Manchester City in the second leg of the semi final on Wednesday.
Luckily for Liverpool their 4th place rivals didn’t fare much better as Newcastle lost 5-2 to Fulham and Chelsea couldn’t break down a brave Norwich side who got their first clean sheet of the season…. Perhaps Fernando Torres is a sleeper agent sent to bring Chelsea down from the inside, as the Spanish “star”, once proclaimed by many as the best striker in the world, has now gone 15 games without scoring, his worst form since arriving in England.
Tottenham Hotspur took on Manchester City in a game that gave the 2 league champion hopefuls a chance to truly show what they are made of. City went 2 nil up, only for Spurs to put in a truly hearty performance to bring the game back to 2-2 thanks to goals from Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale, City looked to be very much on the back foot and Defoe even had a chance to clinch the game for Spurs however he missed by inches from Bales cross and minutes later a clumsy challenge by Ledley King gave Balotelli an easy conversion from the spot for the 3 points. However what looked like an intentional stamp from Balotelli on to Scott Parker’s head soured an otherwise brilliant game, and the feisty Italian striker may be facing a retrospective ban from the FA.
Meanwhile Arsenal took on Manchester United, looking to avenge the humiliating 8-2 defeat they suffered earlier in the season. However thanks to a late goal from Danny Welbeck, United managed to bag the 3 points, and remain only 3 points behind league leaders city
